Activity Level
The pleasures of this two week self-drive Canada vacation package lie in meandering at your own pace through gentle landscapes, historic small towns and quaint fishing villages - and along the way meeting the famously friendly people of The Maritimes.

For visitors, Canada’s eastern provinces are reminiscent of Maine in the US, Cornwall in the UK or Brittany in France - but much quieter than all three and with their own unique charm and a culture that is distinctly Celtic. It is not unusual to hear someone playing the bagpipes or be in an old pub and a fiddler strike up a jig.

Vacations in Canada can be as active or relaxed as you like - get out and enjoy the outdoors on foot, bicycle or sea-kayak - or relax over a lobster dinner, or sit on the porch of your historic inn with a good book...

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Your Canada Vacation Package Begins - Arrive in Halifax
Arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia (New Scotland) and check into your hotel in the heart of the old town to relax after your journey.

Day 2 - Explore Halifax on Vacations in Canada
Halifax is a bustling port with a colorful history and today you can choose one of two tours to help you explore.

- A morning city tour will get you acquainted with sites such as Citadel Hill National Historic Site and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, famous for its poignant collection of artifacts from
The Titanic .

-Or explore the city on your own and take an afternoon “lobster cruise’ around the harbor and into the Atlantic, where you help the crew pull up a lobster trap and later enjoy a lobster dinner.

Day 3 - To Digby via Peggy's Cove on your Eastern Canada Vacation
Pick up your car this morning and drive the famous Lighthouse Route to the fishing village of Peggy’s Cove, set amid granite rock and coastal barrens, then on to the historic port of Lunenburg, home of the tall ship Bluenose II. Then head west through Kejimkujik National Park and the lush Annapolis Valley to the romantic west coast port of Digby (famous for its scallops), your overnight stop.

Day 4 - See Whales & Birds from Brier Island
Today’s highlight of your vacation package is a whale & bird-watching cruise to Brier Island, where you join a scientific survey of an area teeming with wildlife - including humpback, fin and endangered right whales, as well as dolphins, porpoises and a cacophony of seabirds. Overnight in Digby.

Day 5 - Digby to Fredericton
This morning take a short ferry ride across the Bay of Fundy -- famous for some of the world’s highest tides (you can literally watch the sea coming in) and a must see on vacations in Canada - to the port of Saint John. You are now in New Brunswick, a province with a rich mix of cultures - Indian, Acadian (French), Scottish & Irish to name a few. Head north past lakes, forests and farmland to Fredericton, the provincial capital for your overnight stay.

Day 6 - Travel to Moncton on your Canada Vacation
Today we suggest you drive east to Fundy National Park, stopping to admire charming covered bridges along the way, then spend the afternoon winding your way through quaint fishing villages to Moncton for the evening. Here you may visit the remarkable Magnetic Hill where you can put the car in neutral and experience the illusion of being pulled by a ‘magnetic force’ - this always brings laughs on vacations in Canada.

Day 7 - Moncton to Charlottetown
Today we suggest you drive to Le Pays de la Sagouine (literally ‘The Land of the Poor Woman who Scrubs Floors’) for a fascinating insight into Acadian culture. This working village, lifted from the pages of writer Antonine Maillet, shows how Acadian joie de vivre helped the people triumph over hardship for centuries. Carry on over the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province. The addition of the impressive Confederation Bridge has made driving vacations in Canada much easier!

Day 8 - Exploring Prince Edward Island - by bicycle if you choose
PEI is famous as the home of one of Canada’s fictional heroines A nne of Green Gables - and you can visit the house said to be the model for her home. There is also a national park famous for its sand dunes and bird life. The island is perfect for cycling and we highly recommend exploring the backroads, coastline and small villages on two wheels, stopping to talk to the friendly locals as you go. Ask your Canada vacation specialist about adding a bike rental to your package.

Day 9 - Travel to Cape Breton Island
Leaving PEI today, you head back across the Northumberland Strait to Nova Scotia and on to Cape Breton Island, voted by National Geographic one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Along the way you’ll see peaceful farmland, quaint villages, and the magnificent highlands around Bras d’Or Lake before arriving at the delightful little town of Baddeck for the night. There is a fascinating museum dedicated to the life of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, who had a summer home here.

Day 10 - Cape Breton Kayaking Adventure on your Canada Vacation Package
If you have not tried sea-kayaking before don’t worry - if you can sit and move your arms you can do it - and in Baddeck you are on the protected Bras d’Or Lake ‘inland sea’. You’ll see a massive rock spire that hides a waterfall, and paddle to a small beach for lunch cooked on an open fire.

Day 11 - Continue to Liscomb Mills on your Canada Vacation Package
Today you’ll explore more of Cape Breton Island, circumnavigating the great inland sea of Bras d’Or Lake with its fascinating native history, and visiting the French colonial Fortress of Louisbourg, for a unique insight into life in 18th century Acadia. Then drive south along the coast to the quaint fishing village of Liscomb Mills for a relaxing overnight stop.

Day 12 - Liscomb Mills to Halifax
This morning explore Liscomb Game Sanctuary, with its stands of virgin forest and an abundance of wildlife, such as moose, deer, mink and muskrat. Follow the Marine Drive back to Halifax for the last night of your vacation package.

Day 13 - Depart Halifax
Much too soon you leave the friendly locals and beautiful sights of Eastern Canada behind as your vacation package comes to an end.
