SAMPLE ITINERARY
Day 1 - Arrival in Tofino (Friday)
Welcome to Tofino! This charming village is located on the Pacific Coast of Vancouver Island, at Clayoquot Sound, a UNESCO protected biosphere. The forests, beaches, waves, and trails surrounding Tofino are a delight to explore, but the laidback charms of strolling and browsing this tiny town (pop. 1700) are sure to please as well. Relax for the evening in your water view room at the Days Inn Weigh West Marine Resort.
Day 2 - Hot Springs Adventure
Today’s highlight is sure to be a 6-hour expedition to stunning local hot springs. Departing from Jamie’s Whaling Station, you will board a 9-metre cabin cruiser and travel through the breathtaking scenery of Clayoquot Sound. This pristine world is home to wildlife and whales, and hopefully you’ll spot one or two! Arriving at Hot Springs Cove you will have several hours to explore the ancient rainforest on the 1.2 km boardwalk that leads to the thermal springs where you’re encouraged to relax and soak. Return to Tofino by boat (a return by floatplane is also available for an additional cost). Bring along good walking shoes, raingear, towel, bathing suit, and a packed lunch. Choose any of the delightful restaurants in Tofino (the seafood is incredible) before retiring to the Weigh West Resort for the night.
Day 3 - Getting into the Kayak
After a morning at leisure, meet your group at 10:30 am to unload your boats and gear. Get an in-depth overview of what the week has in store at an orientation session, followed by lunch. This afternoon, pack up your gear, slip your kayak into the water, and go over paddling techniques, navigation and safety, before beginning your kayak tour through the West Coast waters of Clayoquot Sound.
Days 4 - 7 - Kayaking
BC kayaking is incredible, and this 6-day kayak the untamed and dramatic seascape of Meares, Vargas & Flores Island.
Throughout your week you'll get to see the Big Tree trail on Meares Island where you'll be in awe of trees that are over a thousand years old. Some trees are so large that it takes nine people linking hands to encircle them. You guide will also discuss and show examples of the flora and fauna of a West Coast temperate rainforest. Vargas Island has magnificent open west coast sandy beaches that you can explore, while searching for treasures that can wash up from as far as Japan. The ultimate prize is the glass ball, which fishermen in Japan use to float their nets. Keep an eye out for eagles' nests; eagles are numerous in Clayoquot Sound, and they perch from seemingly every tree. At night, listen for the distinct sound of wolves howling from the nearby hills. Cougar, bear, whales and porpoise are among the residents of the sound. And Clayoquot Sound has some of the best birding on the coast.
Day 8 - Back to Tofino
Friday morning marks the end of your BC kayak tour. After breakfast pack up one last time and head back to Tofino. A delicious lunch will be served en route, returning to Tofino around 2:00pm.
