Active Canadian Rockies by Train – Day-by-Day
Eastbound shown. Westbound works in reverse.

Day 1 – Arrive in Vancouver
Vancouver is getting a reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and depending on your arrival time, you might want to start your trip by just relaxing and watching the world go by in an outdoor restaurant, or getting out and exploring on foot or by bicycle.

Day 2 – A tour of Vancouver the way the locals do it
Fresh Tracks is all about not following the crowd, and this is the un-tour of Vancouver. It includes the major sites – plus a dash of bird-watching, a bit of hiking in the woods, a visit to a salmon hatchery – and all in a vehicle running sustainably on vegetable oil!

Day 3 – On the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Kamloops
Today is the first of two days real relaxation – a chance to read, chat, play games or just chill - as some of the most spectacular scenery in the world rolls past your window. The train service is impeccable - and you can always stroll outside to a viewing platform for a breath of pure mountain air. Overnight in the Canadian mountain town of Kamloops.

Day 4 – On the Rocky Mountaineer train – into the Canadian Rockies
This morning return to the Rocky Mountaineer, for the second leg of your train trip to Banff, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. You’ll learn the history of the Rocky Mountain railroad and watch for bears, elk and eagles as you climb steadily towards the high Rockies. Overnight in Banff.

Day 5 – An active day in the Canadian Rockies
Step outside and breathe that cool, fresh Rocky Mountain air – because today you are going to get out into the real wilderness of the Canadian Rockies! We include a choice of three guided activities – all of which take about half a day - and you can always add others if you wish.

1.Whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse River
There is nothing quite like a river trip for getting you into wild country, slowing down to ‘river time’ and safely sneaking up on unsuspecting wildlife. This is an exciting Rocky Mountain river trip (class II to IV rapids), that anyone can do if they have an adventurous spirit. A barbecue lunch is included.

2. A classic hike in Yoho National Park
The forests are cool and fragrant and it is a steep-ish climb for an hour or two – then you emerge into the sunlit alpine meadows, surrounded by the high peaks and glaciers of the Canadian Rockies and - if you are lucky - a sea of wildflowers at your feet. Picnic lunch included.

3. A horseback ride through the Bow Valley
This is still a country where a lot of people wear cowboy hats and high boots - so this is a real western experience. After getting acquainted with your ‘trusty steed’, (and they are very trusty), you’ll climb through thick forest up Sulphur Mountain, for spectacular views of the Canadian Rockies & Bow Valley.

(Other activities you might want to ask about when you book are: a round of golf, a lesson in fly-fishing, an independent canoe trip and an evening nature safari.)

Day 6 – Deeper into the Canadian Rockies – Banff to Lake Louise
Lake Louise was considered such a quintessentially Canadian experience that they put it on the bank notes - so today you take the short trip there (45 minutes) and have a final day to spend in activities that you didn’t get to do on day 5. Or you could just choose to relax by the lake and marvel at the view. Overnight Lake Louise.

Day 7 – Depart Calgary.
Rather than over-nighting in Calgary we feel it is better to stay in the Rocky Mountains the evening of day 7 and go direct to the airport from Lake Louise today – a journey of about 2 hours. So we suggest you don’t make your outbound flight too early in the day.

Just a quick note to Genevieve to say Claire and I really enjoyed our trip on the Rocky Mountaineer and the hotels we were accomodated in. The Banff Springs was the best hotel I have ever stayed in, so thank you for the upgrade. Chateau Lake Louise was also wonderful with the best view I have ever seen. All in all a wonderful last few days to our honeymoon.
